BC Casino Construction Begins

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – As reported by the Globe and Mail: "Efforts to attract a more mainstream clientele to British Columbia's increasingly lucrative gaming sector take another step today when construction begins on a new $100-million casino complex in New Westminster.

"B.C. Lottery Corp., the agency that oversees the province's gaming industry, has seen its share of income from casino lotteries and bingo almost double to an annual rate of $892-million from $500-million in 2001.

"Profits are expected to rise in the next few years as major casino operators such as Gateway Casinos Income Fund and Great Canadian Gaming Corp. complete work on new state-of-the-art facilities.

"…As part of the effort to appeal to a wider audience, the fund's privately held affiliate Gateway Casino Inc. will hold a groundbreaking ceremony in New Westminster today to launch yet another project.

"When it opens late next year, the $100-million Starlight casino will replace existing facilities that are located inside the decks of a riverboat near downtown New Westminster. It will feature 600 slot machines, along with 54 gaming tables, a show lounge and a 25,000-square-foot 'interactive' sports bar…"
